Why is bac water used to reconstitute peptides?
Peptides are supplied as a freeze-dried powder and have to be dissolved before anything can be measured out of the vial. Bacteriostatic water is used rather than plain sterile water because of one ingredient: 0.9% benzyl alcohol. That preservative lets the same vial be drawn from repeatedly across 28 days instead of being discarded after a single opening.
A reconstituted vial is almost never used all at once, which is exactly the situation unpreserved water cannot handle.

Does adding more bac water make a peptide weaker?
No, and this is the point people most often get backwards. A 10mg vial contains 10mg whether you add 1mL or 3mL. What changes is how much of that 10mg sits in each millilitre, and therefore how large a volume you measure out.
More diluent means larger, easier-to-measure volumes on the syringe barrel. Less diluent means the vial lasts through fewer draws and small errors in measurement matter more.
How do you reconstitute a peptide step by step?
- Bring both vials to room temperature. Cold glass and cold powder make the process slower and messier.
- Wipe both stoppers with an alcohol prep pad and let them dry.
- Draw your chosen volume of bacteriostatic water into a syringe.
- Insert the needle at an angle so the water runs down the inside wall of the vial. Do not jet it directly onto the powder.
- Set it down and let it dissolve. Swirl gently if it needs encouragement.
- Write the date on the vial label before you put it away.
The two steps that get skipped are the angle and the label. The first protects the compound, the second is how you know when 28 days is up.
Why should you never shake a reconstituted vial?
Shaking does not dissolve anything faster and it puts mechanical stress on a molecule that was just brought into solution. Peptides are fragile in a way that salts and sugars are not. Letting a vial sit for a few minutes achieves the same result with none of the risk.
How long does a reconstituted vial last?
Two separate clocks run at once. The bacteriostatic water gives the vial a 28 day in-use window from first puncture. Whatever you dissolved has its own stability and its own storage requirement, which is usually refrigeration even though the diluent itself needs none.
